2001 Offseason

Well the end of season spin spun and I got some bad news. QB Don Ferguson announced his retirement, finishing his career with 37,566 passing yards (29th all time), 314 TD passes (15th all time) and 142 INTs (42nd most all time).

Ferguson didn't have as long a career as other top QBs as he sat his first 4 years in Washington, before signing with New Jersey as a free agent and winning the job over Paul Marcum. One record Ferguson will likely hold until we get a new version is his 64 TD passes in 1996.

In the post season is where Ferguson made a name for himself. His TD/INT ratio was worse in post season play (47/39), but he led the Generals to the playoffs each of his 8 seasons as a starter. His overall playoff record was 15-6 and he led New Jersey to 3 consecutive World Bowls, losing World Bowl XXIII to Houston before defeating Portland in XXIV and XXV.

Antonio Martinez takes over, and he was a starter during his time in Tampa Bay. Martinez had some big statistical games with the Bandits but he also had interception problems so he was allowed to test the market. He has had some success with New Jersey in limited action and I'm curious if he can carry on the legacy.

Free agency begins in 7 hours, who will sign the big money free agents? There aren't many good, young ones available but there are some, perhaps more than usual. There are plenty of vets available as well. They may be old but some of them can still play, they just likely wanted too much guaranteed money so their GMs let them test the market.

I actually checked out the draft class early, as it helped me make free agent decisions. It's garbage for the most part. According to my weights, there aren't enough players rated 70+ to cover 2 rounds (non kickers). QB and OL look especially weak to me.

Round 1 75-89
Round 2 74-69
Round 3 69-66
Round 4 66-62
Round 5 62-58
Round 6 58-54
Round 7 54-49

Looks like the middle rounds could have some depth pieces, maybe some starters if they boom.

I would type more, but the newly departed owner just informed me tonight that nobody reads the forums, so I'm out.

If anyone is reading this, we had our first dead cap relief request tonight, which I denied. Normally I wouldn't say anything but dude quit over it. The Georgia Force were taken over around midweek 7 of this past season, and he made a trade and signed some players off waivers. That's it for transactions, no attempts at cap relief were even tried.

Fast forward to tonight's request, it was made to me on discord and when I linked our league rule about it, explaining why I said no, his response was "Ok noone reads forums any more... Im in cap **** with really bad deals".

Those bad deals were made by the AI before he took over, and I don't really know if I would have granted his request had it been made when it needed to be made. I certainly can't grant it now after he had a more than half a season to restructure contracts, cut some **** and sign much cheaper ****.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse and the same applies here. I'm sorry he didn't take the time to read the forums but rules are rules.

As far as Discord goes, I have no plans on starting one. I'm already way, way behind with the extras I used to do and the last thing I need is more stuff to run/get behind on.

The way I look at it is you have to come to MFN to play the game, so what's an extra click or 2 to see if anything important has been posted? MFN has forums here so I post MFN related stuff here. Discord is nice for the extras, and if I had no job I'd start one for us and load up on stats and stuff. That being said, I don't see the need to start a separate discord server up to post important announcements when I can just do it here.

So I'm just randomly looking at various rosters and I wanted to see what the champs were doing, find out if Plummer retired and I see he has 57 contract offers out. Dang Smirt, no wonder you hate free agency 1. That is a **** load of contracts and I can't imagine how painstaking that must have been.

On the flipside, I have noticed a couple of teams with zero contract offers and that's not going to help anyone improve their team.

Pleasantly surprised with my free agent week 1 signings as players are signing for ridiculous amounts now adays!!!!

I saw a 300 million dollar contract (RB/50 million/season) and another 277 million dollar deal (QB/46 million/season) plus a kicker signed for 82.5 million (13.5/season).

I guess you have to pay to win!!!!

It must be nice to live in the USFL world as a player.....it's 2001 and they are making 2022 era money!!!! And we will probably never see a real world RB demand 50 million a season ever!!!

Smirt, just one question for understanding: Why did you sign your own RB from FA for 300+ millions? Did you miss his renegotiation?

Btw congratulations to your victory in the World Bowl

FA #1 sucks starting with the coaches. Very bad job by JDB that we still have to go into 12 different coaches to protect and re-sign and that we can't do a 1-click $1 raise on the team page with check mark boxes.

You're a good dude and league admin. I'm targeted by many but an admin like Admiral forced me to have to protect myself in the past. The coward posted my free agency situation in great detail right before FA #1 forcing me to have to take an aggressive tactic to survive.

Thank you.

I didn't have the cap to re-sign and then he was the only game in town, therefore, he now becomes my main weapon. No other move in free agency for the role.
