1991 Offseason Talk

It still amazes me, some of the huge contracts given to mediocre players in this league. I'm not complaining, rather thinking out loud. I think it's a product of an always full league that does a good job locking up talent long term. If someone has holes to fill, the options are usually limited, hence the bigger contracts to those decent players that fall through the cracks.

If you are new to the league, here it's best to come with your best offer right away, as most good FA don't wait to sign, since they're usually flooded with offers. Now I already knew this and still struck out on all 4 I tried to sign. Nature of the beast.

With FA usually being barren, it makes having a good draft even more important.

It’s crazy. The flip side, in our case, having like 100 mil in cap space so not to overpay for a mediocre player isn’t worth keeping all that money. No real talent ever hits the FA mkt. It’s one of the few leagues that you need to draft well.

I am guessing rebuilding must take a while, if the draft and "rebuilder" trades are your only practical option for player acquisition.

No instant gratification here.

That's what makes leagues like this great! Drafting and retaining talent is key. The only bad contracts are the ones that make retaining your own talent impossible.

We don't have the off the field issues of living up to the contract or players holding out because someone else makes more money.

The only way to truly rebuild in this league is to trade away talent for future draft picks and draft well!

With that in mind, it would be REALLY nice if someone would make an offer for the Pittsburgh players I put on the trading block.

Just sent a offer for Dirks. I usually package those picks for a future 5th round pick, but I think Dirks will help me this year.

I need a WR but Wheeler is old and a little slow for my liking. If you still have him after the draft and if I don't draft a WR, I might reconsider.

Michigan is looking forward to restocking with the Dorey trade. But man he is a stud

There are no compensation picks for free agents in this game, right? I started playing last week and haven't seen anything about it (just participated in my first draft in cjfred's Monsters league and there wasn't a supplemental round), but I would assume that is a big reason for the state of the FA market. People may be more likely to let some players walk - and offer smaller contracts - if there was a chance to qualify for compensatory picks.

No compensatory picks but you are free to sign as many undrafted rookies as you want....the problem is there simply isn't much available in the later rounds or post draft.....This game doesn't have many longshots hit to become quality starters.

Just a reminder that we have a new rule in place for 1991 https://usflwfl.myfootballnow.com/forums/1/1715?page=1#10573. No more WR playing CB or vice versa.

Whenever the new update comes, I will probably remove the punt block ban as it shouldn't be needed then. I play in Victory League, which is a bleeding edge league. What does that mean?

Bleeding Edge Game Engine Notice

MyFootballNow will automatically create new leagues as existing leagues fill up. On the bottom of each page you will see the version of the game engine being used in the league you are in. As new versions of the game engine are released, all leagues will automatically update to the newest stable engine at the conclusion of each season.

Except this one.

This is the bleeding edge beta league. What this means is that as new features are considered stable enough to introduce into the game engine, they will appear in this league for real-world testing immediately, whether that is in the middle of the offseason, in the middle of the season, or even the day before the league championship. By participating in this league, you must understand that it is possible - likely, even - that these updates could cause unexpected results for the games in this league, sometimes for extended portions of the season.

The benifit of participating in this league is that you will get to see bug fixes and additional features faster than you would in any other league. Features and fixes may appear in this league several months before the general release receives those features. The trade off, of course, is that this league will certainly experience its share of issues that may be frustrating to you as a player. Even if something goes terribly wrong, there will be no do-overs in this league.

So, please consider this before taking over a team in this league.

One thing that will increase with the new update is sacks. Everybody is getting sacks right now, though it's preseason, so we'll see how prevalent they are when the starters play the whole game. One other factor is we are just in year 2 of the league and some teams may have pretty weak OLs which could skew stats.

If anyone wants to keep an eye on this league to see what's in store for our future, here is the league home https://victory.myfootballnow.com/
