Week 5 recaps now...these aren't spoilers, unless you're the LA owner that hasn't logged in for over 2 weeks.
Houston crushed Baltimore 94-0 in a record setting performance. Dale Baber tied the all time record with 11 TD passes and Randy Savage set the record with 9 TD receptions, breaking David Austin's previous record of 8 set in 1986 with Memphis. Savage also set the record with 734 total yards in the game as he caught 12 passes for 556 yards and 9 TDs and had 12 punt returns for 178 yards and a TD, giving Macho Man 10 TDs today, or 2.5 Al Bundy's (4 TDs in a single game). Baber threw for 752 yards on 30/31 passing, with the yardage total the 6th most all time. Rob Van Dam ran for 144 yards and a TD while Snake Roberts caught the other 2 TD passes from Baber. Houston's defense had a good day as well, holding Baltimore to 77 yards and sacking Hector Bednar 9 times, 4 by Allan Sweeney.
Honolulu blocked some punts and their average drive start was the Los Angeles 32 yard line as they crush the Express 77-3. The box score shows Los Angeles lost fumbles on their first 3 drives (in the drive chart) but down further on the box score, it shows just 1 fumble. It's not matching up but I'm not going to try and figure it out, Victor Russell completed 27/32, 178 yards and 3 TDs, Ben Johnson ran for 3 TDs and David Gonzalez blocked at least 3 punts, scoring 2 TDs and a safety in the process. With all that great field position, the Hawaiians didn't put up many yards, 325 in total, so no yardage stat lines to mention. Defensively, Honolulu allowed just 47 yards and had 11 sacks, 6 by Dana Nelson.
San Antonio beat Memphis 55-14 behind a big game from George Warner. Warner finished 23/36, 615 yards and 7 TD passes and would normally be player of the week if not for Dale Baber. Warner's big day produced a trio of 100 yard receivers: Eric Rodriguez (5-181-2), Jessie Anderson (8-174-1), and Michael Barry (3-120-2). Barry also led the Gunslingers ball carrying committee with 77 yards (175 yards as a team). The Gunslingers defense sacked Gary Westerfield 5 times and intercepted him 3 times.
New Orleans beat Arizona 48-0 in a game where the VooDoo defense didn't even allow the Wranglers non place kickers to try a FG. Arizona was 0/16 on 3rd down, lost a fumble, took 6 sacks and amassed 75 total yards. James Wright completed 28/43, 453 yards and 5 TDs. Nicholas Reyes caught 7 for 138 yards and a TD while Jacob Becker caught 6 for 100 yards.
Michigan beat Chicago 41-9 in the first meeting between these teams fighting for the Midwest title. Willie Reddish threw for 252 yards and 2 TDs while the running committee had 188 yards and 3 TDs. Brendan Tullis led the way with 92 yards and 2 TDs. William Barrett caught 8 passes for 95 yards and a TD to lead the receivers. Defensively there wasn't much to talk about as they had 1 INT and no sacks but forcing punts is just as effective.
San Jose beat Tampa Bay 36-16. Scott Isaacs ran for a pair of 1st qtr TDs, Myron Dustin threw for 515 yards and 2 TDs, and Richard Dickinson had a Pick Six. Lynn McLaurin caught both TD passes among his 19 for 285 yards while Aaron Bush chipped in with 11 for 149 yards. The SaberCats did lose the turnover battle 4-2, but that just hurts style points.
Boston improves to 5-0 with a 16-13 win over Cleveland. Nicholas Walker got the scoring underway with a 42 yard TD run for Boston before Carl Langlois gave Cleveland the lead with a pair of TD passes. One of the XPs was no good so the Thunderbolts led 13-7. The Breakers defense (7 sacks, 1 fumble recovery) kept Cleveland off the scoreboard the rest of the game while the offense chipped away with FGs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th qtrs to win. Boston had Cleveland pinned deep in their own territory at the 2 minute warning, forced a punt, and started the game winning drive at the Cleveland 43. Five plays later Felipe Norfleet's 36 yard FG at the gun gave Boston the win.
These were the games I wanted to discuss first from Week 5. The rest of the games will go in order listed.
New Jersey beat Detroit 18-9. The Generals ran for 174 yards, Curtis Kim had a TD pass and Howie Schwab made 3 FGs to lead New Jersey to the win. William Oquendo was sacked 6 times, 3 by Sheldon Cooper and 3 by Nathan Explosion, with Cooper scoring a safety on one sack.
Washington beat Charlotte 24-0, forcing the Hornets to punt after every drive. The Federals defense had 2 sacks and no turnovers but still dominated while the running game had Michael Erickson's back. Erickson was 13/22, 183 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT but the Federals ran for 201 yards and a TD. William Flock had the TD and led the committee with 115 yards on 31 carries.
Birmingham beat Georgia 38-6 with a balanced attack. The Stallions ran for 177 yards and a TD (Mohamed Manno 9-60-1 led the way) with 176 passing yards. Russell Gall threw for 184 with an 8 yard sack but he also threw 4 TD passes. Lex Luger caught 2 of the scores and Manno had 1 with a combined 130 yards (60 rushing, 70 receiving). The Stallions defense sacked Georgia QBs 9 times, 3 by Nelson Castro.
Southern California beat Florida 24-3 behind 3 Michael Broughton TD passes. Broughton completed 25/41, 267 yards with Michael Deeter catching 6 for 119 yards and 2 TDs. Nicholas Meis had a good day for Florida, when he was able to stay on his feet. Meis completed 34/41, 249 yards but he was sacked 11 times. David Smith had 4 sacks, Kurt Salgado 3, and James Harris 2. Ten different Blazers caught a pass, led by Ronald Proctor's 11 for 112 yards.
Denver beat Portland 28-14. Barton McDonnell had very few passes hit the ground as he completed 33/39, 286 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs. Six different Gold players caught a pass, in fact all 6 players caught either 5 or 6 passes, no more, no less. Patrick Molina led Denver in rushing (11-61-1) and receiving (6-70-1) while Kevin Hillman added 59 rushing yards and 2 TDs. The Gold sacked Curtis Torres 8 times, half by Jerry Franklin.
Oklahoma beat Oakland 17-3. Gary Kahn ran for 71 yards and a TD while Stephen Morrow threw for 217 yards and a TD to Domenic Winstead, who caught 9 for 105 yards. The Oklahoma defense was stingy today, and when they did allow a decent drive to the Invaders, they either missed a FG or turned it over on downs.
Pittsburgh beat Orlando 21-10 in a battle of playoff contenders. Neither offense was smooth as each QB threw 2 INTs and each kicker missed a FG. The Maulers had 6 sacks, 4 by Michael Peters. Orlando scored first on a Michael Smith pass to Joseph Calkins then Andrew Paul tied it with a 63 yard TD run. The score remained 7-7 until the 3rd, when Thomas Hampton threw an 8 yard TD pass to Arthur Ortega and a 91 yard TD pass to Marc Morgan for a 21-7 lead. Orlando added a FG early in the 4th but could get no closer.
Jacksonville beat New York 13-7. It's hard to believe that the New York Stars were 1 win away from a World Bowl trip last season given their 2012 results and despite an unspectacular performance, Jacksonville extended the Stars' misery. William Barron found James Aguirre for a short TD pass for a 7-0 lead midway through the 2nd, and Aguirre led the Bulls in rushing (11-66) and receiving (4-38-1). The Bulls added a pair of FGs as the defense forced the Stars to punt on every drive up to this point except one drive that ended in an INT. Jamie Orman finally got New York on the scoreboard with an 11 yard TD pass to Israel Yang with 4:18 to play but that's as close as they could get.
Shreveport beat Philadelphia 20-13. The Steamer aren't known for offense but today they put up 358 yards on the Bell. Frederick Martin ran for 112 yards against his former team while Scott Nolte completed 20/26, 208 yards and a TD. Robert Lavender caught 5 for 93 yards and a TD to lead the receivers. Philadelphia had 190 total yards for the game with 80 coming on their final drive when the offense finally scored. Joel Jasso finished threw a 23 yard TD pass with 3:30 to play but never saw the ball again as Shreveport ran out the clock. Philadelphia's previous score was a 102 yard kickoff return by Jason Wharton.
