USFL Power Rankings

One thing I've seen in other leagues is custom made power rankings, because we all know the MFN power rankings are ****. Everyone probably has an opinion on which stats are the most important, but for the purpose of these rankings I used YPC offense and defense, YPA off/def, points for, points against, penalties and turnovers.

I used yards per play rather than total yards because I feel that's a better talent measure. For example my Generals are 6th in total yards allowed on defense but just 15th in YPC defensively and 14th in YPA. That tells me my ball control offense is keeping my defense off the field enough to mask the fact they're average.

The scores are like golf, lower is better. I count the first 6 stat categories and add them together (YPC off/def, YPA off/def, PF, PA). The last 2 categories, penalties and turnovers, I add together and divide by 2, then add that to the other total.

Without further ado, here are the inaugural Commissioner Rankings:

1) Washington Federals 31
2) (TIE) Houston Gamblers 49
Memphis Showboats 49
4) Baltimore Stars 57.5
5) Tampa Bay Bandits 62.5
6) (NY) Stars 67.5
7) Birmingham Stallions 68
8) (TIE) Denver Gold 92.5
New Jersey Generals 92.5
10) Chicago Blitz 93
11) Philadelphia Bell 96
12) Florida Blazers 102.5
13) Oakland Invaders 105.5
14) Honolulu Hawaiians 112
15) Michigan Panthers 117
16) Los Angeles Express 117.5
17) Georgia Force 126
18) Arizona Wranglers 126.5
19) Cleveland Thunderbolts 127
20) Portland Storm 132.5
21) (TIE) Southern California Sun 138
Jacksonville Bulls 138
23) Orlando Renegades 138.5
24) Detroit Wheels 142.5
25) San Antonio Gunslingers 151.5
26) Shreveport Steamer 155
27) Pittsburgh Maulers 158
28) Boston Breakers 160.5

If I take out the turnovers and penalties, Memphis would be #1 with 25 points, followed by Washington (29), Houston (40), Baltimore (46), (NY) Stars (50), Birmingham (51) and Tampa Bay (55).

These are actually wrong slightly. I was going to do week 9 rankings before work, and I got as far as penalty yardage when I realized I did it backwards for week 8. The drop down stat list ranks the team with the most penalty yardage as #1 and I scored it accordingly.

The team with the most penalty yards should be #32. I need to read the list backwards, so I'll do it after work.

Sorry, but the numbers don't lie. I measure 8 categories and the Federals are top 5 in 6 of those, and the only bad ranking was penalty yards. Considering you're 31st in that and Baltimore 32nd with a combined 17-1 record, I'm not sure I should even count penalties.

If I take out penalties and turnover ratio, Memphis would be #1 with 25 points, followed by your Federals with 27 then Birmingham (41), Houston (42) and Baltimore (50).
