Denver—The Gold improved their record to a perfect 10-0 on Sunday, routing the Sun 27-6 at home in Week 10 of the 2022 regular season. Head Coach Robert Tovar's team clinched their division earlier but remained dominant, showcasing efficient offense and a well-rounded defense.
The Sun opened the scoring with a 49-yard field goal by Clayton Hubbard early in the first quarter, taking a 3-0 lead. However, the Gold quickly responded in the second quarter, taking control with four unanswered touchdowns. Quarterback Hale Merrie completed 38 of 56 passes for 402 yards and three touchdowns. Merrie connected with multiple receivers, including Stick Opshun, who scored a rushing touchdown and finished with 23 receiving yards, and Mason Jahr, who had a rushing touchdown and added 50 receiving yards.
Dez Moines led all receivers with a team-high 152 yards, while Jimmy Jinx contributed 81 yards receiving. John Riggins III anchored the ground game with 86 rushing yards.
The Gold struck first in the second quarter when Merrie threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Stick Opshun. Keith Estep converted all four extra points and nailed two field goals during the game from 36 and 24 yards out, contributing 10 of the team's points.
Additional touchdowns came on a 2-yard pass to Donald Chenard and a 13-yard scoring pass to Mason Jahr just before halftime, pushing the lead to 21-3 at the break.
In the third quarter, Estep added a 36-yard field goal, extending Gold's lead to 24-3. He later capped the scoring with a 24-yard field goal in the final minute of the third.
Defensively, the Gold recorded two sacks and secured one interception along with a fumble recovery. Denver's defense limited the Sun's offense to just 159 passing yards and 37 yards on the ground. Sun's quarterback Raymond McDaniel, who punted frequently during the game, was intercepted once.
The Sun had two forced fumbles on defense but could not capitalize offensively. Their only points came from two successful field goals by Hubbard, with no touchdowns scored.
Gold committed 10 penalties for 83 yards, while the Sun were flagged three times for 30 yards. Neither team converted any third downs, reflecting solid defensive stands.
With the victory, the Gold maintain their top spot in the division with a 4-0 record and improve their point differential to 345 points scored against 95 allowed over the season. The Sun fell to 4-6 midway through the season.
The Gold now look to continue their unbeaten streak into Week 11 and solidify their playoff position under the guidance of Robert Tovar.
