PISCATAWAY, NJ — The Generals continued their dominant 2023 regular season by defeating the visiting (NY) Stars 27-14 on December 10 at home. With the win, the Generals improved to 12-2-1 overall and 5-1 in division play, while maintaining a seven-game winning streak. The Stars fell to 6-9 and remain last in the division, eliminated from playoff contention.
The Generals opened the scoring early with a 56-yard field goal by Mike Nugent at 5:16 of the first quarter. The Stars countered with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter — Joel Rogers on a 4-yard run at 12:35 and Austin Harned's 19-yard touchdown pass to Robert Hooker at 7:11 — establishing a 14-3 lead by halftime. The Stars' kicking game did not contribute points as they did not attempt any field goals.
Turnovers played a critical role in shifting momentum. The Generals' Jeremy Standish recovered a fumble in the third quarter, setting up a 37-yard touchdown catch by Standish from Zachary McClure. That cut the lead to 14-9. McClure then connected with Marco Roberts on a 10-yard touchdown pass at 5:31 in the third quarter, putting the Generals ahead 17-14.
Defensively, the Generals forced three fumbles — recovering one — and recorded an interception by Ken Mary late in the third quarter. The Stars forced one fumble and sacked Zachary McClure once but were limited to just 73 passing yards on 13 completions out of 21 attempts.
In the fourth quarter, the Generals extended their lead with a 3-yard touchdown run by Keith Byars and two successful extra points by Nugent. A late 48-yard field goal by Nugent sealed the outcome.
Zachary McClure quarterbacked the Generals with 208 passing yards and two touchdown passes, adding 146 rushing yards on 37 carries. Running back Keith Byars contributed 101 rushing yards and a touchdown, plus 35 receiving yards. Jeremy Standish had 34 rushing yards, 62 receiving yards, and a touchdown reception. Emeka Egbuka led receivers with 64 yards.
Joel Rogers was the standout for the Stars, rushing for 118 yards and one touchdown and adding 22 receiving yards. Robert Hooker added 39 rushing yards and a touchdown catch.
The Generals controlled possession and third-down efficiency, converting 8 of 15 attempts. They capitalized on all red-zone opportunities with two touchdowns. The Stars managed only 2 of 11 third-down conversions and also scored twice in the red zone.
Head Coach Travis Washington's squad has now clinched a playoff berth and sits second in the division standings. The Generals will look to maintain their momentum heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
