The Gold maintained their perfect record in the 2023 season with a narrow 26-24 victory over the SaberCats on Sunday at the SaberCats' home field. With this win, coach Robert Tovar's squad improves to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in the division, confirming their clinched division status and setting a strong pace as the regular season winds down.
Gold took an early lead after a first-quarter interception by Trey Sapp set the tone defensively. The first score came late in the opening quarter when quarterback Hale Merrie connected with Bowie Nife for a 2-yard touchdown. Keith Estep's extra point put Gold ahead 7-0.
In the second quarter, despite a costly sack and fumble by Merrie recovered by SaberCats defender Richard McCord, Gold responded with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Merrie to Flex Yofish. Estep's successful extra point and a 58-yard field goal right before halftime extended Gold's lead to 17-7.
SaberCats quarterback James Wright led a comeback late in the second quarter and early in the fourth, including a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dave "The Cobra" Parker to trim the deficit to 17-14. However, a 43-yard field goal by Estep and a remarkable 74-yard kickoff return touchdown by James Marshall quickly brought Gold back into a 20-14 lead. Marshall's return was notable as SaberCats' Charles Colon was injured on the play.
SaberCats answered with a field goal and then took a 24-20 lead following a short drive, but Gold responded late when John Riggins III ran in a touchdown from the 1-yard line, reclaiming the lead at 26-24 with just over a minute left in the game.
Attempting to sew up the game, Estep missed a 54-yard field goal wide right in the final seconds, but the defense held firm, sealing the win.
Merrie completed 30 of 48 passes for 394 yards and 2 touchdowns, though he threw two interceptions and was sacked once. His top targets were Marshall Bernardi, who amassed 114 receiving yards, and Flex Yofish with 100 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, John Riggins III carried 23 times for 84 yards and scored the decisive touchdown.
The SaberCats quarterback James Wright completed 21 of 32 passes for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns with one interception. Dave The Cobra Parker led receiving with 99 yards and a touchdown. The SaberCats rushed for 105 yards on 28 attempts but failed to score a rushing touchdown.
Defensively, the SaberCats recorded two interceptions and forced a fumble in the contest. Gold's defense intercepted one pass and applied steady pressure with one sack.
Gold holds a perfect 13-0 regular-season record after this tight win and remains undefeated within their division. The SaberCats drop to 11-3 but have already clinched a playoff berth with a strong overall season.
Next week, Gold will look to continue their winning streak, while the SaberCats will seek to bounce back in the final weeks to improve postseason positioning.
