Denver's Gold continued its undefeated run in the 2023 regular season with a 20-3 home win over the Panthers on November 12. The win improved Gold's record to 11-0 and secured their playoff berth.
Gold took the lead late in the first quarter when running back John Riggins III scored a four-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds remaining. Keith Estep added the extra point to make it 7-0. The home team extended the lead in the second quarter with a 41-yard field goal by Estep, pushing the score to 10-0 by halftime.
Neither team managed to find the end zone in the second half. Estep converted a second field goal in the second half, cementing Gold's scoring at 20 points. Panthers' Kyle Lewis made one field goal attempt, accounting for their only points.
Gold's offense was led by quarterback Hale Merrie, who threw for 201 yards and posted one interception. John Riggins III contributed 60 rushing yards and caught two touchdown passes. Wide receiver Marshall Bernardi led the receiving corps with 71 yards.
Defensively, Gold recorded three sacks and forced one interception and one fumble recovery. Panthers' linebacker Frank Coggin also made an impact with three sacks.
Panthers struggled offensively, rushing for only nine yards and completing 19 of 32 passes for 105 yards without scoring a touchdown. Both teams were equally disciplined with three penalties each for similar yardage.
Coach Robert Tovar's squad remains undefeated and holds a perfect 4-0 record in division play. With this victory, Gold improves its points for and against tally to 431 and 65 respectively. The Panthers, now 5-6, face the challenge of snapping a four-game losing streak and improving their standing.
The game featured strong special teams play with multiple punts resulting in fair catches and a few key touchbacks, setting defensive tone for much of the contest. Gold's Brandon Hughes consistently pinned the Panthers deep, with several punts traveling over 40 yards.
Gold will look to maintain their dominant form as they continue toward the playoffs, while the Panthers aim to rebound and keep hopes alive for postseason positioning.
