SAN JOSE — The SaberCats continued their dominant season with a 24-0 victory over the Outlaws on Sunday at home in Week 11 of the 2023 regular season. San Jose improved to 10-1 overall and maintained a perfect 4-0 division record while extending their winning streak to six games. The Outlaws fell to 5-6 and dropped their second straight game.

From the opening kickoff, it was clear the SaberCats were in control. The game’s first play was a highlight for San Jose, with returner James Marshall taking a 63-yard kickoff all the way for a touchdown. Ken Bench’s extra point gave San Jose the early 7-0 lead.

Quarterback James Wright contributed significantly, completing 22 of 38 passes for 253 yards and one touchdown while adding a rushing touchdown. Wright’s touchdown run came early in the first quarter on a 10-yard carry, extending the lead to 14-0 after Bench’s successful extra point.

Wide receiver Joe Tedder was active both as a runner and receiver, rushing for 30 yards and a touchdown and catching passes totaling 99 yards. The SaberCats accumulated 131 rushing yards on 30 carries, complementing their efficient passing game.

Defensively, San Jose was dominant, recording five sacks and forcing a critical turnover. Defensive tackle Oscar Jobe led the effort with three sacks, while right defensive end William Maki contributed two sacks. The defense held the Outlaws to just 137 passing yards and 48 rushing yards. The Outlaws' lone interception came when James Wright threw one early, but it did little to slow the SaberCats' momentum.

The Outlaws struggled to find offensive traction throughout the game. Quarterback Anthony Fisher completed 20 of 37 passes for 137 yards and was intercepted once. The Outlaws failed to score despite field goal attempts and multiple punting situations. Their only field goal try, a 58-yard attempt by David Sun, was wide left early in the first quarter.

Special teams played a significant role in field position. Frank Olmeda’s punting for the SaberCats helped consistently pin the Outlaws deep, contributing to San Jose’s defensive dominance. San Jose’s Ken Bench also added a 56-yard field goal just before halftime to extend the lead to 17-0.

Penalties were minimal on both sides, with San Jose being flagged three times for 29 yards and the Outlaws twice for five yards. The SaberCats’ efficiency was notable, with no third-down conversions attempted or recorded, indicating they controlled possession largely through effective running and defensive stops.

With this win, the SaberCats remain atop their division and appear well-positioned for the postseason, bolstered by a defense that continues to stifle opponents and an offense that efficiently capitalizes on opportunities.

Coach James Bond’s team demonstrated balanced execution in all three phases of the game. Their ability to score early and maintain pressure throughout helped secure the shutout and maintain their role as division leaders.

The Outlaws will look to regroup after falling to 5-6 and search for answers as the season progresses. Their lack of scoring and inability to generate consistent offense posed major challenges in this matchup.

San Jose’s next game will be an important test as they aim to keep their winning streak and playoff aspirations intact.
