The San Jose SaberCats defeated the Memphis Showboats 9-6 in overtime on January 1, 2023, to advance past the Divisional Round in the 2022 league playoffs. The defensive contest was marked by strong special teams play and solid defense from both squads.

Neither team managed to find the end zone, with all scoring coming via field goals. The Showboats opened the scoring late in the first quarter when kicker Harvey Holcomb converted a 56-yard field goal, giving Memphis a 3-0 lead. Holcomb finished the game 2-for-2 on field goals.

The SaberCats' Ken Bench countered with three successful field goals spanning the second, third, and overtime periods. Bench's perfect kicking performance, going 3-for-3, accounted for all of San Jose’s points.

The offensive output was limited for both teams. Showboats quarterback Charles Walker completed 24 of 46 passes for 208 yards but was intercepted twice, impacting potential scoring drives. Richard Kelleher led Memphis rushing with 114 yards and added 39 receiving yards. Mike Simon contributed 80 receiving yards for the Showboats.

San Jose’s offense featured a balanced rushing attack with 33 carries for 144 yards, led by wide receiver Daryl Scott’s 98 rushing yards. Wide receiver Dave The Cobra Parker added 61 receiving yards and 25 rushing yards. Quarterback Frank Olmeda completed 20 of 28 passes for 159 yards but threw two interceptions.

Defensively, the SaberCats registered four sacks, including three by Weakside Linebacker Cleveland Mershon. The Showboats recorded two sacks and two interceptions. Both teams struggled with penalties, with Memphis committing four for 25 yards and San Jose one for 10 yards.

Special teams played a pivotal role. Frank Olmeda’s punting pinned Memphis deep multiple times, including a 63-yard punt resulting in a touchback and a 52-yard punt late in the second quarter. Memphis kicker Holcomb also aided field position with several long punts, while Sean Sheffield consistently fair caught punts and kickoffs for the Showboats.

The game remained scoreless through the second half as both defenses stiffened. Neither squad converted any third-down opportunities or red-zone visits into touchdowns.

Overtime was decided by a 25-yard field goal from Ken Bench after both teams failed to advance into scoring range during possession. The SaberCats’ victory under head coach Jose Davison ends a defensive battle and sends San Jose to the next playoff round.

The Showboats, coached by Jeffery Robinson, held the run better than expected but couldn’t capitalize on two critical interceptions by their defense to generate points. Their season concluded with a narrow loss to the SaberCats in a low-scoring defensive affair.
