SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose SaberCats defeated the Arizona Wranglers 18-7 on Sunday at their home field, maintaining their division lead and extending their winning streak to 11 games in the 2022 regular season Week 14 matchup.

Head Coach Jose Davison’s SaberCats improved to 12-2 overall and remain unbeaten at 5-0 in division play, clinching the division title ahead of the playoffs. The Wranglers, coached by Scott Carraway, dropped to 3-11 on the season, continuing their five-game losing streak.

San Jose built an early lead in the first quarter after a critical turnover by Arizona’s David Fields, who fumbled near his own goal line. Albert Johnson recovered the ball at the Arizona 5-yard line, setting the stage for a quick SaberCats touchdown run by Joe Tedder. Tedder also converted the two-point conversion with a short run by Lloyd Tilghman, giving San Jose an 8-0 lead early in the game.

The SaberCats extended their advantage early in the second quarter as quarterback James Wright connected with wide receiver Dave The Cobra Parker for a 44-yard touchdown pass. Another two-point conversion run by Tilghman put San Jose ahead 16-0.

The Wranglers responded late in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown pass from David Fields to Joshua Lindsey, followed by a successful extra point to cut the deficit to 16-7 at halftime.

San Jose’s defense held strong throughout the game, registering seven sacks, including two each by Albert Johnson, Cleveland Mershon, and Richard McCord. The SaberCats' defense also recovered two fumbles and forced two turnovers overall.

The SaberCats resumed their scoring in the third quarter when Dave The Cobra Parker recorded a one-yard rushing touchdown, capping a game that saw him amass 75 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, and 75 receiving yards.

Both teams struggled to move the ball effectively after halftime, relying heavily on punting battles. Frank Olmeda’s punting was pivotal for San Jose, consistently pinning Arizona deep and allowing the defense to maintain pressure.

The SaberCats finished with 106 passing yards on eight completions and 150 rushing yards on 42 carries. The defense’s dominance was instrumental in limiting Arizona to just seven points and 101 passing yards on 16 completions. San Jose’s disciplined approach reflected in only 20 penalty yards on two infractions.

With this victory, the SaberCats solidify their position at the top of the division and continue to build momentum as the postseason approaches. The Wranglers, eliminated from playoff contention, face an uphill battle to end their season on a positive note.
