Numbers framed a tense and defensive-minded clash in Week 12 as the Orlando Renegades fell 23-13 on the road to the Steamer, marking their first loss of the season under Coach Rueben Mahaffey. Both teams entered with identical 11-1 records, but while Orlando had clinched the division, the Steamer had only secured a playoff berth and were fighting to improve their standing.
From the outset, the game followed a pattern of punting and field goals rather than touchdowns. Orlando’s Renegades struggled to convert in the red zone, failing to reach it effectively, as evidenced by zero red zone visits and no touchdowns from either side. Their 27 completions on 44 attempts for 202 yards by quarterback John Rice showed some efficiency but was hampered by an interception. Meanwhile, the Steamer leaned on quarterback Stan Williams, whose 22 completions out of 38 passes produced 281 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
The divergence in scoring came largely from the kicking game and ground execution. The Steamer's Rufus Stewart was perfect on three field goal attempts, including a long 49-yarder in the first quarter that gave them an early lead. The Renegades kicker Gregg Zavala kept Orlando in the hunt with two 52-yard field goals, showcasing impressive range but no touchdowns from Orlando's offense undermined their competitiveness.
In rushing, Orlando’s George Porter led with 44 yards on the ground and even found the end zone through the air with one receiving touchdown. The rest of the Renegades’ rushing attack amassed 44 additional yards but was unable to crack the red zone for a score. Orlando's balanced attack of 202 passing yards and 88 rushing yards was still not enough. Defensively, however, the Renegades performed well in creating turnovers with two forced fumbles and one recovered, matching their lone interception. This was a notable aspect considering the Steamer’s defense sacked Orlando zero times, limiting backfield pressure.
Special teams played a pivotal role with Renegades’ punter Jerome Ramirez managing several lengthy punts, consistently flipping field position—one notable 58-yarder that pinned the Steamer near their own goal line. Despite this, Orlando couldn’t translate these opportunities into points. Conversely, the Steamer repeatedly answered with strong punting and defensively forced three turnovers including two fumble recoveries.
Penalties were minimal for the Renegades with only one penalty for 10 yards, contrasting with the Steamer’s four penalties costing them 25 yards. Yet the errors weren’t enough to disrupt the Steamer’s march to victory.
Coach Mahaffey’s team now faces the task of regaining momentum following this lone loss. With a division record still unblemished at 5-0, the Renegades hold onto the top seed but must shore up efficiency in high-leverage scoring situations if they hope to defend their division crown.
This game uniquely highlighted that despite the Renegades’ superior offensive yardage (290 compared to 300 total offensive yards by the Steamer), the inability to convert red zone visits into touchdowns and the absence of sacks limited their opportunity to secure a win. Next week will be critical as Orlando aims to rediscover their offensive rhythm and capitalize on the strong defensive foundation they maintain.
Renegades Stumble Against Steamer in Defenses’ Duel, 23-13
Despite solid ground gains and a reliable kicking game, Orlando’s Renegades fail to capitalize in a tightly contested Week 12 matchup, slipping to 11-2 but holding onto the division lead.
