New Rule Proposal: Cap on Trading of Future Draft Picks

Proposal: A team must keep a draft choice in two of the first three rounds for all future drafts until the next season flips. When the new season begins, a team may trade those picks for the current draft only. They must retain two picks in the first three rounds of all future drafts. Example: The Jabberwockys, currently in the 2024 season, must keep two picks in the top three rounds heading into the 2025 season. When the 2025 season begins, they may trade away all picks in the 2025 draft. They may trade only one pick each from the first three rounds of the 2026 and 2027 drafts.

OK, 48 hours has passed. There are still six votes out there, but, even if they were all to be "yes" votes, I wouldn't want to adopt a rule by such a slim margin.

I was somewhat surprised at the outcome, since the vote during the discussion phase was so overwhelmingly in favor (13-5). But, that is OK. I think this was a valuable exercise for us. An issue was brought up, discussed, and put to a vote. There was no real acrimony, just coaches presenting the case from different perspectives---those who desire the flexibility to add pieces for the present and those who found their desire to build for the future hindered by the actions of the coaches who preceded them.

We will always look at measures that can promote competitive balance and the long-term health of the franchises. As a league, while not perfect, I think we're in a pretty good place.

There should be 5 votes withstanding because I am not going to vote.
