2010 Outlaws Camp:
Another draft and another year in a little dusty camp turning teenagers into men, call me Bear Outlaw Bryant. Eight picks were used with the goal to make sure the Outlaws could out-swim a boat, out-deal a gambler, and out-draw a gunslinger. Let's see how it went.
1.31 WR Paul Vega 82 vol, -8: A huge miss to start the draft as Vega could not capitalize on his huge potential to duo with Dominic Winstead to give Raymond Settles an exceptional 1-2 punch of 90+ speeders. Vega is likely to still make the roster given how developed he was at avoiding press coverage but will likely never see the number 1 role that he was envisioned for when drafted.
2.31 DB Roger Sampson 86 vol, +3: A boom at least even if it was a small one. Sampson has the sideline to sideline speed with enough strength to deliver a boom over the middle or in the alley. While his coverage skills develop he will likely just be depth where his speed and tackle ability can be showcased.
3.31 WR Francis Martin 100 vol, -12: Even though Martin spent all his college career in the heat of SoCal, he could not handle the heat out here on the plains. Another shot at adding premier speed to the offense turned out to be another blank.
4.15 OL Linwood Abbott 96 vol, -14: Abbott had exceptional intangibles that he just needed to capitalize on for this pick to seem like a heist. Instead Abbott couldn't handle coaches being hard on his lack of finesse in drills and seemed to quit throughout camp. An instant cut for a locker room cancer without the skills to be called a polarizing player.
6.27 OL Garry Evans 50 vol, +3: Ownership was happy to see Evans still on the board in the 6th after originally considering him with the 4th and 5th round pick that was used to trade up for Abbott along with the 5th round pick that was traded away for a future 4th and 5th. His work ethic shone through even with his lack of strength as he looks to have the speed the Outlaws are wanting out of their front five.
6.31 OL Tommy Dias 42 vol, -1: Dias came into camp with a good pass blocking base already even though there were questions about how high his ceiling was. Still Tommy possessed the speed and pass blocking skill to be drafted and should likely make the roster as the Outlaws retool.
7.26 QB Charles Mae 94 vol, +3: Mae was mostly drafted to be a science experiment for Outlaw scouts as they look to see how much improvement 7th round picks with 90+ vol can show. If he keeps working on his stuff there's a chance he could fight to start in Settles' shadow.
7.31 FB -> WR Wilbur Miller 84 vol, +0: Even though it says +0 Miller is a "boom" who could make the roster assuming he can cut back on the powdered donuts and make his new weight. He comes in with decent intangibles especially considering his draft position who should look to make the most of the preseason snaps that might be the only time he sees the field this season.
Overall not a great draft and only because the booms don't have high stats in relevant skills or big booms. One of Vega or Martin booming would have completely changed my opinion but here we are. The Southwest doesn't care what your draft looks like so neither will I...
Good luck everyone
