* The
Detroit Wheels (10-2) are back in the driver's seat, claiming the top seed in the American Conference for the moment via their 19-6 win over the
Denver Gold (10-2). Michael Temples threw a 75-yard TD pass to Billy Brink on the third play from scrimmage for the game's only TD. The Gold punted eight times, turned the ball over on downs twice, and had only two drives that consumed more than five plays.
* Michael Sonnenberg might be 100 years old, but he can still get behind the defense.
Jacksonville's veteran WR caught a 60-yard TD pass from Charles Evans in the fourth quarter to give the Southeast Division-leading
Bulls a 17-10 win over the Pacific Division-leading
Honolulu Hawaiians. Sonnenberg has 10 TD catches in his 10th pro season and has gone over the 10,000-yard mark in career reception yardage.
*
Los Angeles CB John Diehl intercepted three passes as the
Express won its fourth in a row, 16-10 over the
Florida Blazers, to move within a game of the Hawaiians.
*
Tampa Bay Bandits CB Mark Rogers made nine tackles, recovered two fumbles, and intercepted a pass during a 30-24 victory over the
Georgia Force, Tampa Bay's third win in its last four games.
*
Houston Gamblers QB Tony Dean threw for 712 yards and nine TDs in a 72-3 rout of the
Oklahoma Outlaws. WR Gabriel Ahrens caught eight passes for 313 yards and four TDs. Dean's passing yardage ranks No. 5 all-time for a single game and his nine TDs rank fourth (three QBs have thrown 10, including Birmingham's David Schmitt this season).
* The rest of the league apparently hasn't figured out that, if you are ever going to beat the
New Jersey Generals, now is the time to do it. The Generals are 3-0 with no healthy RBs on their roster, including this week's 20-17 triumph over the
Philadelphia Bell. New Jersey ran the ball 50 times for 27 yards, but Stephan Labelle threw a pair of TD passes and the defense intercepted three Philadelphia passes in the second half.
* The
Boston Breakers appeared to be on the verge of a huge upset win, but David Schmitt's 2-yard TD pass to Mark Peterson with 1:10 remaining gave the
Birmingham Stallions a 14-10 win.
* The
Michigan Panthers moved back into the American Conference playoff race with a 21-3 win over the
Chicago Blitz. The Panthers limited Chicago to 160 net yards, intercepted two passes, and forced a safety.
* The
Washington Federals pulled into a tie with
Pittsburgh atop the Atlantic Division by shutting down the
Maulers, 23-6. The Federals have moved star RB Cory Martin, twice a 1,000-yard rusher for the Feds, to WR and are now carrying no RB on their roster. WR Robert Sullivan took Martin's place in the backfield and rushed for 101 yards, including a pair of fourth-quarter TDs.
* The
Arizona Wranglers are back to .500 (6-6) after Ronald Hensley kicked 54- and 52-yard field goals in the fourth quarter to give his team a 20-19 win over the
Shreveport Steamer.
* The
Southern California Sun snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 20-3 win over the
San Antonio Gunslingers. James Wise caught 60- and 75-yard TD passes from Martin Greene.
