Would You Trade For This WR?

Larry Brown is one of the more interesting players I've had on any roster. I put him on the trading block because he is a 9th-year guy and my team is going nowhere. He has been a terrific No. 2 receiver for me, catching 65.4 percent of passes thrown his way for 12.2 yards per catch.

But, I don't know if anyone will want him. Why? His speed is 46.

Is speed the only important attribute? That's the debate here. Brown has 73 acceleration, 95 pass catching, 76 route running, 83 avoid fumble, 90 kick catching, 92 run blocking ... everything BUT speed.

I am not trying to drum up trade activity with this post. I am just posing this question: Is there REALLY only one attribute that matters?

Under 50 is too slow for my taste, 50 is my limit but speed at WR I'd argue isn't super important unless you like to always have the same plays. A lot of the more popular plays work best with fast receivers, however there are a bunch of plays that actually only work well with slower receivers. This is why I re-evaluate my playbook every season. Because of how the game runs progression and route timing various plays are actually designed for certain speed types of receivers to be most open when the QB progresses to them. He seems like a okay receiver to have but just barely too slow for the way I like them. The catch with slow receivers is they require you to drive the field, they get run down too often rather than pulling in that 90 yarder.

In addition to being a little slow for my taste, he's also too old. I have had several WR's hit the 9th year wall, with their stats declining and/or increased injury frequency.

The faster he is the less I would look at age. In my west coast offense, route running is just as important as speed, since it's a timing based offense.

I'll admit he was involved during recent trade talks with TW. If I ran a more possession-oriented offense he would have some value as a 4 or 5, which is what he has been. He's also a rental, since he likely won't be signed to another deal when he gets to the other side of 30.

Player weights might be different, too. That's the tough part in MFN trading. I know I've had trouble with fire sales myself because of what the league thinks a player is worth vs what I think he's worth. I like guys like TW who understand there is a little back and forth and that a trade won't always happen. But I can't tell you how many angry PM's I've received by owners who get personally offended by a trade offer.

I would say look for someone with a possession O and start there. Or one of the running teams.

This is all good feedback, guys. In other leagues, I have fared well with WRs similar to Brown, but in Possession or Run-Oriented offenses. If I am going to just line up and throw the ball deep on every play (I'll save THAT rant for later), then I probably want WRs who can actually get deep.
