World Bowl XLNew Orleans VooDoo 9 San Antonio Gunslingers 6It's odd that the night before the biggest game of their lives, MFN players are whisked away in the middle of the night to an undisclosed location to play the game. Odder still is there is a sellout crowd who traveled to the game and obviously knew where to go so how are we in the dark? How does MFN do it when a team is lucky enough to play at home?
I suppose the MFN Gods were smiling on New Orleans today, as they found out they were playing World Bowl XL in their home stadium. Was it a parting gift for the departing Legendruthless?
Once we had kickoff, each team drove for a FG on their opening possession before both defenses took over. Nobody scored a TD today, and nobody even scored at all until 4:40 left in the 3rd quarter when the VooDoo took a 6-3 lead with a FG. In between those FGs, both teams had 4 punts and a turnover. New Orleans would have another turnover, allowing San Antonio to take possession at the New Orleans 36 yard line. They advanced the ball 12 yards and got the game tying FG in the final minute of the 3rd.
New Orleans tried a tie breaking FG early in the 4th but it was no good. On the next VooDoo drive, they got deep in Gunslingers territory before settling for the go ahead 23 yard FG with 5:44 to play. San Antonio's offense continued to struggle and they did not get close to the tying FG and ended the game with an INT, allowing New Orleans to take 3 knees and hoist the trophy.
Nicholas Reyes was the World Bowl MVP and drives away in a brand new 2014 Corvette, as is tradition.
This is the 5th World Bowl victory for New Orleans in 11 tries.
New Orleans has won 4 of the last 6 World Bowls, a run matched only by Houston, who won World Bowls XXI, XXII, XXIII, and XXVI. (Other notable runs: Houston won 4/7 from WB IX to XV; Portland won 3/5 from WB XVI to XX).
During this 6 year run, New Orleans has a record of 105-7-1 including playoffs. Their regular season record over this span is 90-5-1 with a post season record of 15-2.
