Top of the Draft Preview

I usually avoid draft writeups because I enjoy the break from writing, plus I usually pick in the later part of round 1 and don't look at the top of the draft. Well when your team has a bad year like mine did and you earn the 8th pick, you have to look at the top of the class.

Once I did look at it and saw an opportunity to get the 2nd overall pick, I took it because I saw 2 clear cut top choices for my team. The rest of my top 8 is fluid, depending on which one of my top 2 I get.

Without revealing too much of my draft board, I'll go position by position.

QB Not a good year to draft a QB, as none seem worthy of a 1st round pick, although I could see possibly 2 being picked anyway. QB is a position where if you need one bad enough you have to take the best available, even if he's being picked too high. Gilbert Galvan will likely be the first QB off the board, despite questions about his accuracy. Eric Ducksworth should be the 2nd or 3rd QB taken, along with James Steiner but none have even 90 accuracy, leaving QB needy teams to hit the trade market.

RB Not a good year to draft a RB either as there are only 5 with 80 speed or above, none faster than 81. Teams that need ball carriers might opt to look at WR or TE to fill their need. I think the top 3 RBs off the board will be Mark Larsen, Allen Ramos (FB), and Robert Meyer.

TE There are some decent speed options at the top of the TE class as 5 of my top 6 rated have at least 70 speed. Wilbert Wolfe will probably be the first TE taken and could be moved to RB. A lot of teams use lighter, WR types at TE but if you prefer the traditional route, you're in luck this year.

WR Thomas Emery is at the head of the class imo and he will likely be a top 2 pick in this draft. He's a 90 rated WR by my weights, with the next best an 83. I counted 18 rookie WR with at least 80 speed, but of course some of those can't catch a cold let alone a football. Some other WRs likely to be drafted today include Ali Blevins, Michael Deeter, Jacob Becker, David Gehring, and Steven Santora.

OL OL is thin this year, if you want a quality starter. My rankings see just 1 OL rated an 80 or above, LG Melvin Weatherford. I have three tackles rated between 76-78, Frisby, Knaus, and Lively. Your rankings might be different, but I don't like this OL class, which is why I traded for a 13 year vet LT.

The glitch is back and I'm obviously not looking at box scores. I guess it's just having multiple MFN tabs open that causes this. I was going to do it all in one post but the defense will have to wait a minute.

DL DL is a strength of my team but even if it wasn't, I'd look elsewhere, although I have strict speed rules for my DEs, they must be 70 or above. Larry Lindquist and Willie Petrucci are atop my rankings, rated 85 and 82 respectively and will probably be drafted today, though they have speed in the 60's. Kelvin Houck is rated 3rd and he has 71 speed but will probably fall to 70 once he gains 4 pounds. They are all kind of volatile too, but that's not always a bad thing.

LB Cleveland Mershon, Don Trevino, and Michael Richmond top my rankings. None of the 3 are burners, with speed between 66-72, but they have the best skill set among the rookie LBs. David Engle could be the 1st LB off the board if someone is looking for the best, fastest LB. He has a few attributes that are mediocre or worse but he has great M2M skills plus 88 speed.

DB Lewis Veliz is another likely top 2 pick with his low volatility and 91 speed. Others probably hearing their name called today are Robert Jansson, Scott Wertz, Jaime Downey, Eric Matherly, Timothy Lear and James Franklin.

K Obviously nobody is expected to take a kicker round 1 but I see just 1 kicker worth taking a chance on and he has 100 volatility. Nick Orozco has 81 kick strength and 94 kick accuracy and a bust would like be huge. Brian Bennett is the 2nd ranked rookie kicker and he needs to boom to be good, as currently his ceiling is 82 strength, 80 accuracy.

P Paul Raymond and Frank Aguilar look to be the first 2 punters taken and barring busts, they should be quite solid. Sang Green is ranked 3rd on my list and he has just average punt accuracy but he can kick hold, which is a bonus.

Happy Drafting Everyone!
