World Bowl XXXVIII was played between the San Jose SaberCats and the New Orleans VooDoo. After the Conference Championship Games end, the teams are not told right away where the game is being played. Instead, the whole world finds out where the game is being played once it's over. In this day and age, I have no idea how MFN can pull this off without anyone spilling the beans. How do the fans know where to go? The TV crew? Many questions without answers...
Anyway, the SaberCats should have known they were in for a long game when they realized they were playing the game in New Orleans, at the home stadium of the VooDoo. Not that New Orleans needed any help, as they sport the 2nd best offense and best defense in the league, but home is always nice.
San Jose got the ball first and were forced to punt. New Orleans returner David Ellison fumbled, with San Jose recovering for a fresh set of downs. The SaberCats continued their drive down to the VooDoo 2, where on 4th down they opted for a FG and a 3-0 lead. A few drives later, San Jose QB Myron Dustin was intercepted by Jack Hall, giving New Orleans the ball just outside the red zone. Two Gerald Waldon runs later and the VooDoo had a TD and the XP gave them a 7-3 lead.
A few more drives ended in punts until New Orleans added a FG in the middle of the 2nd for a 10-3 lead. Myron Dustin answered by throwing an INT to Travis Moyer, leading to another VooDoo FG and a 13-3 lead just outside of the 2 minute warning. San Jose would turn it over on downs twice before halftime but James Jones missed a 42 yard FG try and a 37 yard try, however San Jose was offsides on the 37 yard try and Jones made the 32 yard rekick for a 16-3 halftime lead.
New Orleans broke the game open in the 3rd qtr with TD runs by Howard Becker and Gerald Waldon (his 2nd) for a commanding 30-3 lead. New Orleans would extend the lead with a FG before San Jose finally got a TD to start the 4th. The XP was no good, leaving the score 33-9 and New Orleans closed out the scoring with a FG for a 36-9 win.
New Orleans ran for 247 yards and 3 TDs, led by World Bowl MVP Gerald Waldon's 119 yards and 2 TDs. Waldon also chipped in 48 yards on 7 catches to lead the VooDoo in both rushing and receiving. For his efforts, Waldon will drive away in a brand new 2012 Corvette.
This is the 3rd World Bowl title in 4 years for New Orleans, with their string being broken last season by these same San Jose SaberCats they beat today.
