The USFL/WFL held it's 34th World Bowl in Houston, Texas as the Pittsburgh Maulers faced the San Antonio Gunslingers. Pittsburgh was chasing it's 2nd World Bowl title and the 4th perfect season in league history while San Antonio was playing in their first ever World Bowl.
Pittsburgh got the ball first and punted, then the Maulers defense intercepted George Warner, getting the ball just outside the red zone. Instead of coming away with points, Darrell Harrington gave the ball right back to San Antonio with an interception of his own and we're back to where the original drive started. The Gunslingers were forced to punt and Harrington got the Maulers on the scoreboard with a 50 yard TD pass to Kenneth Allen, with the XP giving Pittsburgh a 7-0 lead.
From here we had several punts before Harrington drove Pittsburgh into FG range in the 2nd qtr. That drive stalled with a 4th and 4 from the 6 yard line and they elected to take the 3 points on a short Gary Ridgeway kick to extend the lead to 10-0. George Warner then led San Antonio on a 10 play, 75 yard TD drive, getting the score on a 1 yard pass to Ronald Atkins to cut the lead to 10-7.
It took Pittsburgh 1 play to take the momentum back as Harrington found Patrick Howard with a pass and 75 yards later the Maulers led 17-7 after the XP. George Warner then threw his 2nd INT of the half inside the 2 minute warning but the Gunslingers defense forced a punt, and the score was 17-7 Pittsburgh at the half.
San Antonio got the ball to start the 3rd qtr and got a 68 yard return to start their drive in Pittsburgh territory. As the Gunslingers approached the red zone, Warner was intercepted for the 3rd time today, killing the potential scoring drive. A few plays later, Harrington gave it back via an INT which led to a San Antonio FG, cutting the lead to 17-10. We saw some more punts in the 3rd qtr, followed by yet another exchange of interceptions, and another punt to take us to the 4th.
Pittsburgh got a FG early in the 4th, extending the lead to 20-10. San Antonio would have 4 drives in the 4th quarter needing 2 scores but they were unable to get into Pittsburgh territory on any of them and the Maulers win their second World Bowl.
Patrick Howard was named World Bowl MVP and he drives away in a 2008 Chevy Corvette for his efforts. Howard caught 6 passes for 124 yards and the momentum stealing 75 yard TD. Darrell Harrington overcame 3 INTs to throw for 320 yards and 2 TDs. George Warner had 1 TD and 4 INTs for San Antonio, and the Pittsburgh defense held Glenn Graham in check, allowing him just 69 combined yards.
