Glen Hampton has the single season receiving yards and TD records with a ridiculous 3,738 yards and 36 TDs with 1 game to play. Hampton padded his record by torching New Jersey with his best game of his incredible season, catching 12 for 468 yards and 5 TDs.
Prior to this season we have had a total of 13 QBs with 6,000 yard seasons and now we have 15, and will likely make it 16 next week if Damien Oleary plays. Hampton's QB Thomas Jacobi has 6,023 yards and 47 TDs while Oleary has 5,941/43 TDs.
If you've done the math, you know someone is missing. That would be New Jersey QB Don Ferguson who is having an excellent season. His 6,364 yards is currently 10th all time, although he might get passed by Jacobi next week. With home field advantage wrapped up, I'll likely sit Ferguson.
Making the decision easier is his 7 TD passes today, giving him 64 for the season. That breaks the record of 63, set in 1980 by Portland's William Hill. Had he been tied, or just short, I would let him play since QB injuries are rare but why risk it now?
Records are nice to have, and Ferguson will have this one for awhile, but I want to parlay this into another World Bowl win. It's been way too long since anyone from the National Conference has won, in fact I think I was the last many, many seasons ago.
