San Antonio Express News - October 18, 1974
In just two more days, the Houston Gamblers and our very own San Antonio Gunslingers will engage in the 2nd Battle of the ongoing War for I-10 Supremacy. With fewer than 200 miles separating them, these two interstate and natural rivals have contributed to the intense competition that is the USFL/WFL’s inaugural season.
The 5-1 Gunslingers, led by QB Tony Smith, have continued to use a balanced offensive approach utilizing many different weapons including standouts RB Jeffrey Graham and WR Donnie Baker. “I just get the ball into the hands of the guy who can do the most damage on any given play…and they do the rest” said Smith.
When asked about the 2nd meeting with their division rival, 1st year Head Coach Robert Loomis acknowledged the tough task ahead of them. “Houston is a good team with solid coaching and excellent front office personnel. If you’re not prepared, it will be a long day. We have our work cut out for us…and being a division game, well, that’s what it’s all about…smashmouth, bigboy football.”
With the Silver Construction Cone on the line once again, the Gunslingers have declared a media blackout and closed practices for the next 48 hours. The SAG ownership group, led by spokesman Toro, stated “The SCC Trophy is sitting majestically in the front office trophy case at Riverwalk Towers… and that’s where it belongs.” And for the moment, it does…
