* The American Conference playoff race just keeps getting more and more interesting. The situation today is that four teams are tied for three spots. The
Baltimore Stars complicated things by knocking off the
Pittsburgh Maulers, 24-17, on Jon Snow's 38-yard TD pass to Michael Gonzalez with 3:12 to play. Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and the the
Washington Federals are all tied atop the Atlantic Division at 9-5, with the
New Orleans VooDoo being the fourth team in that equation at 9-5. Here are the remaining schedules:
Baltimore Stars@ Florida (2-12)
Jacksonville (11-3)
Washington Federals@ Pittsburgh (9-6)
Orlando (2-12)
Pittsburgh MaulersWashington (9-5)
Houston (11-3)
New Orleans VooDoo@ Philadelphia (4-12)
Shreveport (6-8)
The Week 15 battle between Pittsburgh and Washington thus takes on even more significance. The great unknown is this—how many starters will Jacksonville and Houston be resting during their Week 16 games?
*
Jacksonville CB Gordon Wong tied a USFL single-season record with his 14th interception during a 30-6 thumping of the
New Jersey Generals. Wong tied the mark set last season by
Honolulu Hawaiians MLB Douglas Oneal. Two of
Bulls QB Charles Evans' three TD passes went to veteran WR Michael Sonnenberg. The good news for the Generals is, their injured RBs are a week closer to playing again. The bad news is, the loss to Jacksonville knocked them out of the bye week seeding, so those RB may be at less than 100 percent health when New Jersey opens the playoffs.
* We missed this last week, but
Arizona Wranglers WR Cory Robinzine's two TD catches against the
Portland Storm gave him 100 receiving TDs in his career, the first USFL receiver to reach the 100 mark. Hall of Fame WR Dusty Heckman had 97 for the
Oklahoma Outlaws. The Wranglers (8-6) shut out the
Michigan Panthers, 19-0, for their fourth consecutive win.
* Bruno Wilson's four TD passes in the first half led
New Orleans over the
Oakland Invaders, 31-15, after leading, 28-9, at intermission.
*
Houston Gamblers RB Mark Lambert rushed for 82 yards and two TDs and caught 10 passes for 109 more in a 45-22 demolishing of the
Charlotte Hornets.
*
New York QB Edward Swofford passed for four TDs as the
Stars surprised the
Birmingham Stallions (11-3), 28-9, to even their record at 7-7.
*
San Antonio Gunslingers WLB Layne Staley made six tackles, intercepted a pass, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble during a 21-10 victory over the
San Jose SaberCats.
* The
Southern California Sun have won three in a row after topping the
Memphis Showboats, 28-24. Rookie WR/RB Nicholas Wittrock had 88 yards rushing and 65 receiving for SoCal.
* How about the
Boston Breakers? They shut down the
Philadelphia Bell, 16-3, for their fourth victory. Last season, the Breakers were 2-14 and outscored by an average of 23.4 to 9.1. This season, they are being outscored by an average of 15.3 to 10.6.
