Birmingham QB David Schmitt tied a league single-game record by throwing 10 TD passes during a 75-14 stomping of the
Shreveport Steamer. Schmitt was 50-for-56 for 469 yards and a 141.15 QBR. His 50 completions rank third all-time behind former Portland QB William Hill (55 and 53). Schmitt set a record for completion percentage (89.3) by a QB with more than 41 pass attempts in a game. Shreveport's Edgar Jones (23-for-23), Cleveland's Chester Daugherty (19-for-19), and Jacksonville's Charles Evans (18-for-18) have all completed 100 percent of the minimum 14 pass attempts in a game. Schmitt had thrown 10 TDs during Birmingham's first seven games.
* The league's last unbeaten team, the
Denver Gold, is unbeaten no longer. The
Portland Storm shut down Denver QB Dustin Nichols and scored all of its points in the second quarter while surprising the Gold, 17-10. Nichols was 19-for-45 passing for 183 yards (52.36 QBR). Portland, trying to avoid the first losing season in franchise history, has won two in a row after an 0-6 start. CB Kenneth Williams was credited with six tackles and MLB Jeff Melton intercepted a pass.

Memphis QB James Perry fired five TD passes during a 29-point fourth quarter as the
Showboats pulled away for a 46-17 triumph over the
Washington Federals. Perry passed for 548 yards and six TDs in the game and leads the league in TD passes (34), passing yards (3,843), interceptions (18) and QBR (101.26).
* The
Pittsburgh Maulers (6-2) are back on top of the Atlantic Division following a 27-10 win over
Oklahoma in which they limited the
Outlaws to 131 net yards. WLB Fred Leeper had nine tackles for Pittsburgh, which is seeking its first division title in five seasons after having won six in a row from 1974-79.

Jacksonville CB Gordon Wong made seven tackles and intercepted two passes, returning one 40 yards for a TD, during a 44-17 win over the
Tampa Bay Bandits. Jacksonville (6-2) might as well start resting its starters for the playoffs, as the
Bulls are are sitting with a four-game lead in the Southeast Division after eight games.
* The
Arizona Wranglers stopped
Cleveland on third-and-one from the 3-yard line, forcing the Thunderbolts to settle for the tying field goal with 1:36 remaining in regulation time. Then, with less than 5 minutes remaining in OT,
Thunderbolts WR Samuel Draper (100 Avoid Fumble) lost the handle and the Wranglers recovered at the Cleveland 10. Ronald Hensley booted a 27-yard field goal on the next play to give Arizona a 13-10 win.
* The
Detroit Wheels have won six in a row after an 0-2 start, including a 23-9 victory over the
New York Stars behind 94 yards rushing and a TD from The Billy Club backfield (Billy Smith and Billy Brink).

Boston Breakers CB Willie Lawton had 14 tackles and an interception during a 42-28 loss to the
New Orleans VooDoo.
