We're starting to get into the stretch run so I'll probably start recapping the games in order of playoff importance.
The Southwest division has been a dogfight all year and today, Oklahoma and Memphis squared off. Oklahoma out gained Memphis 357-139 but the Showboats' defense and special teams came through with a 17-3 victory. Oklahoma took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd qtr but Memphis took the lead away with Michael Olsen's 100 yard kickoff return. The Memphis defense intercepted 2 passes and recovered a fumble, with one of those INTs setting up the offense at the Outlaws 22. Erik McNamee would convert that into a TD pass and the defense held the Outlaws scoreless after that 2nd qtr FG to force a tie atop the Southwest between these teams at 9-2.
Pittsburgh has already clinched their division but they want home field advantage, and today they faced a New Jersey team that's headed toward a possible playoff berth. Pittsburgh got 142 rushing yards from Matthew Goebel and 3 Brian White TD passes as the Maulers beat the Generals 27-10. The Generals defense wasn't totally inept as they held Patrick Howard to 5 catches, 51 yards and a TD, the first time all season he hasn't topped 100 yards. They also intercepted Brian White 2 times, but the offense was 2/14 on 3rd down and Kevin Via was sacked 5 times by the Pittsburgh defense. Jason Burton caught 6 for 127 yards and a TD to lead the Maulers receivers.
Pittsburgh is 11-0 btw.
Well Jacob Newman finally did it, breaking the single game receptions record, with 23 today. Newman now has 155 this season, good for 2nd all time, behind the 182 of Harold Hedberg of the 2004 SaberCats. San Jose now have the top 3 on the list as last season's 150 by Donald Sykes is 3rd all time.
More importantly for San Jose, they broke their 3 game losing streak with a 37-7 win over division rival Southern California. Larry Henderson was 47/59, 444 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT and 1 sack. The SaberCat BCBC chipped in 121 on the ground as they were 9/15 on 3rd down and 4/5 on 4th. The SaberCats kept the ball over 45 minutes as their defense held the Sun to 76 total yards.
One more game featured current playoff teams, Cleveland @ New Orleans. The final score of 30-10 doesn't tell how dominant the VooDoo were today, as they held Cleveland to 70 yards. Half of that came on a 35 yard Felix Vaughn TD run following an interception that gave Cleveland a short field. New Orleans held Cleveland to 0/12 on 3rd down and the passing game had negative yardage. Carl Langlois was 4/18 for 23 yards and was sacked 4 times for minus 38 yards. Willie Graham threw for 312 yards and 2 TDs while Benjamin Jones caught 10 for 137 and a TD, also chipping in 29 yards rushing with a TD as the VooDoo improve to 9-2.
Now we'll get into the games where 1 current playoff team is playing a current non playoff team.
Houston was upset 25-6 by Jacksonville as the Bulls are just outside of the playoffs currently, though this win helps a lot. This loss is squarely on Dale Baber, who threw 0 TDs and 5 INTs for Houston. Jacksonville QB William Barron completed 20/23, 247 yards and 2 TDs to lead the Bulls today. Jacksonville averaged 1.36 yards a carry and Barron spread the ball around.
Houston falls to 7-4, still a wildcard but 2 games behind 2 teams in the Southwest mean they'll likely stay a wildcard.
Jacksonville improves to 6-5 and is hoping whomever loses this week's New York vs New Jersey game continues to lose so they can slip into the tournament in January.
Birmingham got by division rival Georgia 13-3, overcoming Russell Gall's worst game this year. Gall completed 26/37, 222 yards, 2 INTs and 6 sacks. The Stallions BCBC ran 20 times for 177 yards, led by Philip Snyder's 98 yards and a TD on 5 carries. The Birmingham defense had 6 sacks of their own and improve to 10-1 on the season.
Michigan improves to 9-2 with a 30-10 win over division rival Chicago, despite losing 4 fumbles. QB Willie Reddish lost 2 of those fumbles among his 4 sacks but he also threw for 355 yards and a TD. The Panthers BCBC ran for 187 yards on 37 carries and the defense held the Blitz to 130 total yards.
Philadelphia improves to 9-2 with a 27-9 win over the Denver Gold. Philadelphia lost the turnover battle 4-2 but the offense had 4x the yards of the Gold, 439-103. QB Joel Jasso threw for 342 yards and a TD, plus 2 of the INT and 2 of the 5 sacks they allowed. Bryant Smith also got some playing time and was terrible, completing 1/13 for 5 yards, an INT and 3 sacks. The Bell defense had 5 sacks of their own while forcing 2 turnovers. Roderick Uribe is trying to move back up the receiving list, catching 6 for 152 yards and a TD.
Orlando won 33-3 over division rival Tampa Bay, overcoming 3 INTs by Dwayne Byrd. The Renegades defense allowed 0/14 3rd down conversions, less than 1 yard per carry, 101 total yards, and had 3 sacks with an INT. Byrd threw for 346 yards and 2 TDs aside from his 3 picks and the BCBC had 133 yards as the Renegades improve to 8-3.
Portland beat San Antonio 22-3, overcoming 2 Raymond Oswalt INTs. The Storm defense were all over Dylan Shultz, sacking him 7 times and intercepting him 4 times. Thomas Frank (21-71) and Travis Hopkins (15-66-TD) led the rushing attack as Portland improves to 7-4.
The New York Stars won their 4th game in a row, 20-0 over Florida. The Stars held Graham Folks to 55 yards rushing while QB Jamie Orman completed 26/31, 184 yards and 2 TDs. The New York BCBC had 142 rushing yards while the defense kept the Blazers off the scoreboard, not even allowing a FG try or a red zone opportunity.
New York is now 7-4 and can take 2nd place in the East if they beat New Jersey this week.
These last 5 games involved teams that were not current playoff teams at kickoff time.
Baltimore beat Shreveport 24-6 thanks to 2 Jerry Parker TD passes and a defense that allowed the Steamer just 128 yards. Baltimore got 132 yards from their BCBC, which today was mostly Bernard Rainwater (12-69-TD) and Gerald Parsons (15-52). Baltimore improves to 5-6, 2 games out of the #7 seed.
Oakland blanked Boston 22-0 as their BCBC had247 yards on 46 carries. Guillermo Rockwell led the way with 15 carries, 116 yards and a TD while William Workman and Dale Wild both had 55 yards or better on 12 carries. The Invaders defense held the Breakers to 159 yards, getting 2 sacks and 2 INTs.
Honolulu beat Detroit 11-9, vaulting the Hawaiians into the 7th seed according to MFN. The box score shows an ugly game with 8 combined turnovers and 9 combined sacks, 6 combined penalties and just 1 TD/2 FGs on 5 combined red zone trips. Honolulu got on the board first with a safety, sacking Glenn Burns in the end zone to take a 2-0 lead. They took the free kick and drove for a Brian Copley 6 yard TD run, but the XP was no good and the lead was 8-0. The rest of the game was FGs, punts, and turnovers.
Washington beat Charlotte 17-3 behind an efficient 21/23 passing day from Michael Erickson. The Federals had a 14 play, 80 yard TD drive on their second drive of the game with Erickson finishing it off with a short TD pass and a 7-0 lead. Charlotte would close within 7-3 at the half, but Arthur Smith, who caught Erickson's TD, returned the second half kickoff 103 yards for a TD and a 14-3 lead. Washington's defense had no sacks or turnovers, but they must have tackled well as Charlotte was just 2/13 on 3rd down.
Arizona beat Los Angeles 22-7, which would have cost me money if we could gamble on MFN. Los Angeles was coming off an upset of San Jose while Arizona is coming off a game where they allowed 13 sacks. Wranglers QB Curtis Kim was sacked only 3 times today, completing 26/45, 269 yards with a TD and an INT. Patrick McManus caught 12 for 133 and a TD while Michael Chapin ran for 120 yards and a TD. The Arizona defense played like Washington's, although Arizona did have 1 sack. They held the Express to 1/14 on 3rd down and 0/2 on 4th, allowing 194 total yards.
Time got away from me today, and now it's too close to gametime to get too in depth.
Larry Henderson of San Jose increased his passing yardage lead and is now the 3rd most sacked QB.
Matthew Goebel (Pittsburgh) surpassed 1,000 rushing yards on the season (1,086) and his 8 TDs are tied with Frederick Martin (Philadelphia) and Raymond Still (San Jose) for the league lead.
Most of the season it was Pittsburgh's Patrick Howard leading 2/3 triple crown categories, but now Jacob Newman has sucked so much, he now leads 2/3. Newman's 4 week heater has seen him close the gap in yardage, and he finally caught Howard this week to lead by 3 yards, 1,580 to 1,577.
Talk radio and social media have been going back and forth on who the better WR is. Newman has 155 catches already, 2nd most in a season ever with 5 games to go. Defenses know Newman is getting the ball, yet he has 78 catches for 770 yards the last 4 weeks. Howard has just 3 yards less on half the catches, meaning his average yards per catch is double. Speaking of double, Howard has 16 TDs, more than double Newman's 6.
We now have 5 WR in the 1,000 yard club. Joining Newman and Howard are Roderick Uribe, Philadelphia (1,221), Benjamin Jones, New Orleans (1,160), and Lex Luger, Houston (1,029).
Jonathan Ruch of Michigan has 30 FGs while Daniel Pitts has gone a couple of games without a 50+ yard FG and is now slightly off record pace. Roger Love of Orlando missed another XP and is now 32/38 on the season.
I wish my kicker was close to trying 38 XP. I wish my kicker was close to trying 20 XP. My team doesn't have the least amount of XP but we do only have 11.
Lazaro Mason of Baltimore has 114 tackles, second place has 86. His teammate Joshua Lemmon leads the league with 9 INTs.
Nathan Explosion (New Jersey) leads the league with 21 sacks. Walter Bryant, New Orleans, leads the league with 19 hurries.
Birmingham has led the league in points scored pretty much all season, but Philadelphia have caught them and the Bell's 378 points now lead the league. Birmingham is still 2nd with 366 but Pittsburgh is right behind with 365.
Birmingham (88) and Portland (93) are the only teams with less than 100 points allowed.
Winning Streaks
Pittsburgh 11 Memphis 9 New Orleans 8 Michigan 6 New York 4
Losing Streaks
San Antonio 8 Tampa Bay 7 Georgia 6 Denver 5 Florida 4 Boston 4 Chicago 3
The TE is a disappearing position in MFN, well maybe dwindling is a better word. I've been noticing Patrick McManus of Arizona lately. McManus has 81 catches for 822 yards, good for 7th in the league and tops among TE. Richard Klein of Honolulu (64-664-4) and Earl Drake of Detroit (72-546-1) are the only other TEs on the first page of receiving yardage leaders.
Four games left in the season after today's games and we had 4 more teams punch playoff tickets. Pittsburgh already clinched the Atlantic, Michigan claimed the Midwest today while Memphis, Birmingham, and New Orleans are all assured of at least a wildcard.
Six divisions are officially up for grabs but realistically it's probably 3. Philadelphia can breath a little easier now that New Jersey beat New York as the Bell have a 2 game lead plus a sweep of the Generals. Orlando has a 3 game lead on Jacksonville plus a sweep and Portland has a 2.5 game lead with 4 to play, but the Storm have 3 tough games before they face the Wranglers Week 16.
San Jose has a 1 game lead on Honolulu. Memphis and Oklahoma are tied in the Southwest. Birmingham has a 1 game lead on New Orleans.
Michigan beat Shreveport 17-9 thanks to a pair of Willie Reddish TD passes in the first half. There were no turnovers by either team but the Panthers defense held Shreveport to 3 points until near the 2 minute warning, when they got an 87 yard TD pass, making the score 14-9. The 2 point try failed, as did the onside kick and Michigan added a FG for the final score.
Memphis won 17-6 over division rival San Antonio, and while the Showboats never trailed, the outcome was in doubt until the end. Erik McNamee threw 5 INTs, keeping the Gunslingers in the game and it was a 7-6 Memphis lead until 2:17 to play. A FG made the score 10-6, then the defense sacked George Warner, causing a fumble that Stephen Johnson returned 20 yards for a TD.
Birmingham beat Charlotte 44-14 as Russell Gall got back on track. Gall completed 29/33, 347 yards and 4 TDs although he did get sacked 6 times. The Stallions got 237 rushing yards from their BCBC and the defense held the Hornets to 183 total yards.
New Orleans got past Chicago 28-20 behind 4 Willie Graham TD passes. Benjamin Jones caught 3 of the scores among his 8 for 191 yards. Graham threw for 338 yards and 2 INTs, but the VooDoo defense held Chicago to FGs after both. New Orleans remains 1 game behind Birmingham for the South division.
Pittsburgh remains unbeaten after getting by Los Angeles 24-14. The Express played well but Patrick Howard was just too much. Howard took the receiving yardage lead back with an 8 catch, 244 yard, 2 TD performance today. Pittsburgh got 80 rushing yards from rushing leader Matthew Goebel and QB Brian White finished with 318 yards and 3 TD passes.
Almost time for me to go to work, so I'll stop here until the morning.
San Jose nearly blew a couple different 20+ point leads against Washington but the SaberCats held on to win 41-34 to maintain sole possession of first place in the Pacific. San Jose started fast with a pair of 8 point TDs for a 16-0 1st qtr lead, pushing it to 24-3 before the Federals chipped away a bit to trail 30-13 at the half.
The 3rd quarter saw Washington get within 30-16 before another San Jose TD and 2 point conversion got the lead to 22 points at 38-16. Washington then got a Pick Six, an offensive TD with a 2 point conversion and a FG to climb within 38-34 inside 4 minutes to play. San Jose would drain half the clock and kick a FG to go up a TD and the Federals ran out of time.
Larry Henderson completed 39/56, 398 yards, 2 TDs and 3 INTs with Jacob Newman catching 12 for 90 yards. Raymond Still had 3 total TDs, 2 rushing and 1 receiving. Washington QB Michael Erickson completed 24/31, 293 yards and 2 TDs, with Arthur Smith catching 8 for 146 yards and a TD.
Honolulu is the current #7 seed in the American Conference after their 15-13 win over division rival Southern California. The Hawaiians went up 9-0 after a FG and a TD with a missed XP before Southern California got a 61 yard John Berrios TD pass to Jonathan Phillips in the final seconds of the first half to close within 9-7. Aside from that play, Berrios didn't have a great game as his total stat line was 10/24, 117 yards, 1 TD and 2 sacks.
Honolulu extended the lead to 12-7 with a FG at the beginning of the 4th before lightning struck again for the Sun. Phillip Curry took the kickoff 99 yards for a TD to give Southern California a 13-12 lead. Michael Marmon would later kick a FG for Honolulu with 6:52 left to give the Hawaiians a 15-13 lead their defense would make stand.
Portland beat Oakland 20-3 to get one step closer to clinching the West. The Storm have a 2.5 game lead with 4 to play, but their schedule is daunting, facing Memphis, San Jose, and Oklahoma before closing the season against the 2nd place Arizona Wranglers. Arizona has to play 3 playoff teams themselves before Week 16, facing the East trio of Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey.
I'm going to write a playoff post later, so why did I "spoil" that by going on about upcoming schedules? Because other than 2 Raymond Oswalt TD passes, there isn't much to talk about. The teams combined to go 1/28 on 3rd down...Portland was 0/13, Oakland 1/15. There was only 1 turnover, but 23 punts.
Oklahoma beat Tampa Bay 30-3 to keep pace with Memphis. Raymond Settles completed 27/36 for 313 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, and 1 sack. Not a bad stat line overall, but the top 3 Outlaws receivers' longest catches went for a combined 163 yards, meaning the other 24 completions covered 150 yards. Still 6 yards a completion, not bad right? It's pretty good actually when you take their 3 ball carriers out of the equation. Before I throw shade on them, I should mention they combined for 112 rushing yards on 27 carries with a TD, but Steven McCurdy, Paul Schroeder, and Adam "Not Pacman" Jones combined to catch 11 passes for 2 yards. McCurdy ran the ball well (16-62) but caught 7 passes for 3 feet (1 yard).
The Outlaws defense had 2 INTs, 4 sacks, and held the Bandits to 1/14 on 3rd down.
Houston kept pace with Memphis and Oklahoma, beating Florida 33-12. Dale Baber bounced back from last week's debacle, completing 28/39, 424 yards, 3 TDs, and just 1 INT as Houston jumped out to a 17-3 halftime lead before winning the 4th quarter 16-9 following a scoreless 3rd. Harley Race caught 8 for 135 yards and a TD while Jeremy Rodriguez caught 4 for 106 and a TD.
The Houston defense had 5 sacks and recovered a fumble but it wasn't all great for the 30th ranked unit as Florida QB Nicholas Meis completed 30/40, 254 yards and a TD while also rushing 5 times for 82 yards. That's the most rushing yards in a game by a QB this season, topping Russell Gall's 62 at Shreveport.
Houston will likely be a wildcard but Gamblers fans have to be worried about whether that defense can hold up enough over a 4 game stretch to allow their offense to outscore 4 quality opponents to earn the franchise's 10th championship.
Orlando got by division rival Jacksonville 13-7, putting the Renegades 1 more win or Bulls loss away from another Southeast division title. Dwayne Byrd has been one of the top 5 passers most of the year but he managed just 163 yards on 23/41 passing. Byrd did throw the eventual game winning TD pass late 3rd quarter to John Jones. William Barron had a solid passing game for the Bulls today, completing 26/40, 258 yards and a TD but he got little help from the running game as 23 carries netted just 44 yards.
It was East division week as Philadelphia played Boston while New York played New Jersey. Philadelphia beat Boston 27-6 as the Bell BCBC had 147 rushing yards at over 6 yards a carry. Joel Jasso threw for 263 yards and 2 TDs while the defense forced 3 turnovers.
The win improves Philadelphia's record to 10-2, and while they would have a 2 game lead on whomever won the NY/NJ game, the Bell were hoping for a Generals victory as they swept New Jersey and will help possible tiebreakers.
Like I said in the good game thread, I was worried about losing this game because the Stars have been playing good football lately and I have little confidence in my passing game. So I was surprised to open the results and see...
New Jersey beat New York 31-14 thanks to a ball control offense that kept the ball nearly 43 minutes. Vic Mackey ran 27 times for 166 yards and a TD, vaulting him up to 2nd on the league rushing yards list. Terry Poulin nearly made it a pair of 100 yard rushers, gaining 93 on 21 carries. All of that running opened up the passing game for Kevin Via, who nearly doubled his passing TD total, going from 4 to 7 after completing 20/28 for 229 yards and 3 TDs.
Denver and Detroit faced each other and...nothing personal...played a game you'd expect from teams with a combined 3-19 record. They combined for 422 yards (215-207 Detroit), 47 rushes for 87 yards (less than 2 ypc), 5 INTs, 5 sacks, a lost fumble and 6/34 on 3rd down. One positive stat was Detroit punt returners combined to return 11 punts for 143 yards (Johnny Hartig 6-82, Paul Perez 5-61). There were a combined 24 punts and 3 combined red zone trips resulted in just a pair of FGs. Denver QB Richard Crum threw a 53 yard TD pass to Thomas Warner in the 2nd qtr for the game's only TD and Tyler Garcia nailed a 52 yard FG at the end of the 1st half as Denver beats Detroit 10-6.
Baltimore and Georgia were a combined 8-14, 5 games better than Denver/Detroit but their game was just as ugly. Georgia won the game 10-6 as the teams combined for 260 yards (174-86 Georgia), 47 combined rushes netted 80 yards, the QBs combined to complete 50% of 64 passes for 298 yards but a combined 15 sacks took away 118 yards. Oh, Georgia was 3/17 on 3rd down, Baltimore 5/20, combining for 8/37. Georgia QB Adam Patrick has been among the most sacked QBs this season but Baltimore only took him down 4 times as it was Stars QB Jerry Parker taking the hits, getting sacked 11 times.
Arizona beat Cleveland 22-16 on a Donald Fleming 2 yard TD run and he capped it off by also running in the 2 point conversion at the 2 minute warning. Cleveland came into this game 6-5 with their eye on a possible wildcard, but the Wranglers were the better team today. Arizona had 21 first downs to Cleveland's 10, out gained them 324-173 and they were 11/20 on 3rd and 4th down conversions (11/18 on 3rd, 0/2 on 4th) while holding Cleveland to 3/14 (2/13 on 3rd, 1/1 on 4th). Patrick McManus caught 10 more passes for 78 yards and Michael Chapin had a combined 127 yards and a rushing TD to lead the Wranglers.
**** it raidergreg69. My team was feeling all good about itself and now the locker room is griping, finger pointing, whining and a lil crying. When I was doing my traditional after-game **** chewing all 53 of em said FU at the same time. Then they started singing it. I have much more work to do now. Stupid Generals.............. :)

I know you're kidding but your NY Stars should be favored to win the last 4 games so if they stop griping and go take care of business, they'll be 11-5 and in the playoffs. Regardless of how the rest of the season plays out, you've done a great job of turning your team around after Nosedive Neil put you behind the 8 ball.

I know the players don't like to hit during practice but one look at the missed tackles list and perhaps it's time for some tackling drills lol...says the guy with the 22nd ranked defense.
