A team will use cap space to pick up good free agent talent. That player then goes on the trade block for draft picks. They have to eat the bonus but most teams don't even come close to the cap limit anyway.
I guess that this isn't illegal but I think it goes against the spirt of the roster building system IMHO.
Admittedly I've done this, but it never occurred to me that people would be upset about it. Additionally, I've never signed a player I didn't think would help out my team if I kept them. Sometimes the circumstances change and I just try to make the most of it.
I also feel that even if I was trying to sign a guy just to trade him, it's more gamesmanship than something underhanded. Especially without cap rollover, why not use up your cap space on trade bait?
