Training camp and play familiarity..

By RightAngleToReality

So, training camp just happened in MFN-8 and I have some questions. I read somewhere on these forums that your team would practice and gain familiarity in the selected plays in your playbook during training camp. Nope. I spent a bunch of time last nite recording my team's familiarity with offensive plays (because there's no option for printing this info) and in just about every case the familiarity dropped by ONE percentage point for all the offensive plays selected. However, some plays that I did not select jumped by 15-20 points. So, I don't get it. Is there some counterintuitive thing going on or it is just jacked up. Any insight would be appreciated, by me and probably others... :)

I am thinking the process for the actual tally starts at the training camp stage. Same for the existing injuries recovery, the weight change in pounds due to a position change, and the familiarity as well. Which is a tally of all the players on the team.

So my logic here is that players on your team changed over the off season and so did that familiarity but it wasn’t processed (seen) til training camp. As the players you lost and the players you gained caused those discrepancies in numbers. The old tally was from the old team.

Again I could be wrong but I do know rookies are pregenerated with random familiarity but from pure observation they do seem to be very heavily swayed to one play or another at the top of the scale of distribution .

And again years ago I have tracked that tally and it is a certain amount of snaps and camps which drive numbers and looking at a team of mine which uses a select set of plays(only due to my current RL availability) seems that the familiarity system currently is not buggy beyond the display bug for plays like olb flat zone and other heavily used plays

Me too. This is why half the plays I run in preseason are low familiarity and the other half are near 100%. I've been watching the last few seasons, and I've noticed 3 things.
A: Familiarity gains, if any, are nominal over the course of the entire season - pre to champ game.
B: I've had the same HC on my Nukes for 6 seasons, and again - any familiarity growth is nominal.
C: Most plays - regardless of usage over the course of 1 season, with my direct experience being no familiarity gained in any plays over 3 seasons, do not gain familiarity.

Good logic I never thought of. Still does not explain the pointed lack of positive growth in play familiarity.
Personally, I think the lack of accruement regarding play familiarity in both and across the majority of defensive and offensive plays is a bigger part of the negative familiarity growth experience in the Man OLB Flat Zone.

Bugs be bugs.

Thank you for bringing this subject up. When 2 persons have the same experiences, it means neither of us is a looney and there's a play familiarity bug well beyond the negative growth exploit(s).

I have been looking more closely at this since this morning. I selected 40 offensive and 30 defensive plays that I wanted to "train" my team in during training camp. In every case but one, the play lost 1 percentage point in familiarity. The exception was Goal Line Normal FB Dive (which I DID select) which went from 80% to 100% familiarity. Also, every play that I did NOT select (of which there were 6) that was already at 84% or above increased by 9-13 percentage points. Just a bit more info but I would say it's not a roster turnover issue...

I've noticed a trend where depending on the offensive and defensive playbook, there are a small number of plays that are always high familiarity. I think this small number of plays are the only ones who get the boost and are dependent on what playbooks your head coach has. Might be a bug that selected plays are not gaining familiarity during training camp or intended with only this small amount of plays gaining familiarity

Kind of disappointing. I am sure programming something like this is very difficult. But I think I will fool around with something else and check back from time to time. God Bless... :)

So when you practice a play or see it in a game you gain familiarity. That is offensive and defensive familiarity even though the players is only an offensive player.

So my question is while gaining familiarity in camp where does the logic pull the other plays from? I am guessing from the ones you selected but I haven’t seen anything on that is concrete info.

Perhaps it is just just generated based on the HC and his philosophies. Like west coast and 3-4 or whatever. Scouting a play gives additional boosts and One is to familiarity but I have never went deep in to familiarity. Except it’s there so any player can keep getting better .

I have one team where I am trying to max the familiarity out for long passes. We’re 4 seasons in and not even close..and long passes are still horrendous. Makes me think that you would only need half a bar , as a team ,to be maxed ........as who cares if your star CB is maxed at certain long passes when only your offensive players are the ones trying to execute the long pass.

In other words what looks good on paper might do nothing in the game if the wrong guys are familiar. Personally I just like it not to be very minimal. Other than that I ignore familiarity.

One allocation I drafted a whole team based on coaches , their philosophy , then players experience and then familiarity with plays. Trying to have the smartest team. In general winning there was no comparison to drafting athletics ratings then skill ratings alone.

FWIW....

I never use familiarity when selecting and using plays on offense or defense.

I use plays that work and ignore the rest.

Same. I’ve never paid much attention to it. The only thing I’ve noticed (in-game) is negative familiarity for defensive plays that torpedo my offenses.
