https://paydirt.myfootballnow.com/watch/3258#592315This play is just one example and you see this constantly. Yes, I know it is a 2-Deep defense. But that doesn't mean the two safeties just sit there watching the play from 20 yards down the field. The ball gets handed off and the safeties should immediately start moving toward the ball. But they move laterally, parallel to the line of scrimmage, waiting until the back has crossed the LOS until they start their move to the ball. The safeties should be more instinctive as soon as the ball is handed off instead of continuing their back-pedal. This play drives me nuts. Fix it please.
You see the same thing with LBs moving parallel to the LOS until the ball carrier crosses the line. It's idiotic. The LBs take themselves out of the play by over extending to the outside and the ball carrier cuts inside them and the LBs is nowhere close to making the play as they have moved to far outside. Again, defenders should be breaking to the ball carrier as soon as the ball carrier starts advancing toward in the LOS while he is still in the backfield. And they shouldn't move exactly lateral (parrallel to the LOS). They should be instinctive, reacting to the ball carriers cut up field and plot a direct course to meet the ball carrier as quickly as possible.
STOP MAKING DEFENDERS MOVE LATERALLY UNTIL THE BALL CROSSES THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE.
