What would be really helpful would be to have for each play, rather than the average gain, comprehensive stats : off the top of my head, both for offensive and defensive plays, percentage of completions, number of sacks and interceptions for passes, frequency of negative yardage for runs, frequency of "big gains" for all.
It's just an example : the idea would be too be able to identify the "good earners" which don't make much but gain ground consistently, the defensive plays prone to catastrophe, the "lotteries" that give maybe a completion on 5 tries but each time for 50 yards, etc. It's possible of course to obtain this kind of information by reading the log each game and updating a spreadsheet but I don't have this kind of time and I doubt that many players have it. Now would such a tool "dumb the game down" ? I don't think so but I'm curious of other people opinions.
