Just yesterday Flacco took a sack on a 4th down; obviously he should have just spray and prayed it into coverage, but we are dealing with flawed humans reacting in microseconds. Mistakes happen. Earlier this season Eli Manning was in the reverse situation where he needed to run the clock out and
didn't take the sack. I think these type of situations should (eventually) come down to player intelligence. An unintelligent (and/or inexperienced) player might accidentally go out of bounds when they needed to stay in to run the clock and vice versa. An unintelligent (and/or inexperienced) QB may take a sack where instead he might have forced it into coverage and vice versa.
