This doesn't explain how a QB that averages 58% passing for the year suddenly turns in a 27% game. An offense that turns out 400 yards a game drops to below 100. An defense that gives up 250 yards a game suddenly gives up 350. Not all of that can be explained through game planning.
I think it can easily be explained by playing good teams. If you're like most teams I've seen, your season averages are inflated by all of the bad (or poorly managed) teams you play along the way.
I've had teams averaging over 500 yards and 40+ points all of sudden get shut down by a good team / owner.
Take a look at what my team does in CUST-9 (Auburn), then see what happens when I play London!
